Workshop Overview
This practical workshop introduced participants to the foundations of analysing textual data with Python. The session explored how collections of documents, sentences, reviews, comments, or short messages can be transformed into structured data and examined for recurring words, linguistic patterns, thematic tendencies, and differences between categories.
The workshop connected introductory Python programming with concepts from natural language processing and computational linguistics. Participants learned that text cannot be analysed in the same way as purely numerical data without first making decisions about representation, segmentation, normalisation, and context. Each technical operation was therefore presented as both a computational step and an interpretative choice.
Rather than treating automated text analysis as a method for extracting unquestionable facts, the session emphasised the relationship between quantitative patterns and linguistic meaning. Participants were encouraged to examine what word counts and visualisations can reveal, what they may conceal, and why human interpretation remains essential when working with language data.

The workshop focused on the transition from unstructured language to computationally analysable text. Participants explored how Python can be used to load, clean, organise, compare, and visualise textual information while remaining attentive to ambiguity, context, and linguistic variation.

What You Will Learn
Participants learned how language can be transformed into a form that computational systems can process. The workshop demonstrated that textual data is not inherently structured: punctuation, spelling variation, capitalisation, grammatical forms, abbreviations, and contextual meaning all influence how language is represented within an analysis.
The session introduced tokenisation as the process of dividing text into smaller analytical units, such as words or sentences. Participants examined how apparently simple decisions about where one word ends and another begins can become more complex when working with contractions, compound expressions, punctuation, multilingual content, and domain-specific terminology.
Participants also explored word-frequency analysis as an introductory method for identifying recurring vocabulary and comparing patterns across document groups. They learned to distinguish between the numerical prominence of a term and its actual significance within a text, recognising that frequent words are not always the most conceptually important and that rare expressions may carry substantial meaning.

Practical Project
During the practical component, participants worked with a small collection of textual documents, such as short reviews, educational texts, public comments, news headlines, or thematic articles. The dataset contained several categories that could be compared using introductory natural language processing methods.
Participants began by inspecting the raw text and identifying potential quality issues, including missing values, inconsistent capitalisation, punctuation, repeated records, and formatting differences. They then created a cleaning and normalisation process before dividing the material into individual tokens.
Using Python, participants calculated word frequencies, filtered selected stop words, and identified terms that appeared frequently within the complete dataset. They subsequently compared vocabulary across two or more categories to examine whether different document groups displayed distinctive patterns of language use.
The final stage involved creating a visual representation of the main findings and writing a short interpretation. Participants were asked to explain not only what the computational output showed, but also which contextual, linguistic, or methodological factors might influence the result.
Language, Context, and Responsible Interpretation
A dedicated part of the workshop addressed the limitations of reducing language to counts and categories. Participants discussed how identical words can carry different meanings depending on context and how concepts may be expressed through synonyms, grammatical variation, metaphor, implication, or culturally specific forms.
The session examined how preprocessing decisions influence analytical results. Removing punctuation, stop words, or grammatical endings may simplify a dataset, but it can also eliminate information that contributes to meaning. Participants were therefore encouraged to treat text preparation as a transparent methodological choice rather than a neutral technical operation.
Attention was also given to the limitations of automated classification. Frequency analysis can reveal recurring vocabulary and broad tendencies, but it cannot independently determine intention, reliability, irony, emotional complexity, or conceptual importance. Computational findings were presented as evidence requiring interpretation rather than as conclusions detached from context.
Teaching and Facilitation Approach
The workshop combined conceptual explanations, live coding, guided exercises, collaborative interpretation, and independent analysis. Each technical method was introduced through a small example before being applied to the larger text dataset.
The teaching approach connected programming instructions with linguistic questions. Participants were encouraged to consider what each line of code assumed about language, how a transformation altered the original text, and whether the resulting representation remained suitable for the analytical question.
Live coding made the complete process visible, including data-quality problems, unexpected output, and debugging decisions. Participants learned to inspect intermediate results rather than running an entire analysis without evaluating how the text had been transformed.
Discussion was integrated throughout the session so that learners could compare interpretations and reflect on the difference between identifying a statistical pattern and explaining its linguistic or social significance.
My Contribution
My contribution included designing the workshop concept, preparing the textual dataset, defining the learning objectives, and developing the Python demonstrations and practical exercises.
I structured the session to connect my background in applied linguistics with introductory computational methods. The workshop was designed to demonstrate how linguistic concepts such as word boundaries, variation, ambiguity, frequency, and contextual meaning influence the preparation and interpretation of textual data.
During the workshop, I facilitated live coding, explained Python and text-processing concepts, supported participants in debugging their analyses, and guided discussions about context, reliability, and methodological limitations.
I also encouraged participants to formulate their research questions before selecting technical methods. This helped them understand that a meaningful text analysis begins not with software commands, but with a clearly defined question, appropriate data, transparent processing decisions, and careful interpretation.
