Grammar Awareness and Linguistic Control: From Reflective Knowledge to Self-Regulated Language Use

Abstract

Grammar awareness is frequently associated with the ability to identify grammatical categories, explain rules, and recognize deviations from conventional forms. Although these abilities are important, they do not fully account for the role of grammatical knowledge in language development. Learners may describe a rule accurately while remaining unable to apply it during spontaneous communication. Conversely, they may produce conventional structures fluently without being able to explain the principles underlying their choices. This paper therefore distinguishes between grammar awareness, understood as the capacity to notice, analyse, compare, and discuss grammatical relationships, and linguistic control, defined as the context-sensitive ability to select, monitor, revise, and stabilize linguistic forms in relation to communicative purpose.

The paper develops a conceptual account of the movement from reflective grammatical knowledge towards increasingly self-regulated language use. Particular attention is given to form–meaning relationships, explicit and implicit knowledge, pattern recognition, self-monitoring, self-correction, written revision, spoken production, multilingual comparison, and corrective feedback. Grammar is treated not as an autonomous collection of rules but as a system of resources through which speakers organize time, agency, reference, information, stance, and relationships between ideas.

A Grammar Awareness–Linguistic Control Cycle is proposed to describe the interaction among noticing, interpretation, comparison, hypothesis formation, production, monitoring, revision, and transfer. The model emphasizes that control is not equivalent to error-free performance or conformity to a single idealized standard. It concerns the learner’s increasing capacity to make informed linguistic choices, recognize the consequences of those choices, and revise language according to meaning, audience, genre, and context. The paper concludes that grammar awareness has its greatest educational value when it supports autonomy rather than dependence on external correction.

1. Introduction

Grammar occupies an uncertain position in language education. It is sometimes treated as the central structure around which language learning should be organized and, at other times, as a secondary concern that may interfere with fluency, creativity, or communicative confidence. This opposition rests on a restricted understanding of grammar. When grammar is reduced to the memorization of terminology and the reproduction of predetermined forms, it can become detached from meaningful language use. When grammatical reflection is removed entirely, however, learners may lack the conceptual resources needed to analyse recurring difficulties, compare possible formulations, or develop independent strategies for revision.

The educational question is therefore not whether grammar should be present, but what kind of grammatical understanding supports language development. Knowing the name of a tense, clause type, or syntactic function does not necessarily provide control over its use. Equally, the ability to communicate successfully in a familiar situation does not guarantee that a learner can express more complex distinctions, adapt language to another genre, or diagnose the source of recurring uncertainty.

This paper examines the relationship between grammar awareness and linguistic control. Grammar awareness is understood as the learner’s capacity to direct attention towards language as a structured system. It includes noticing patterns, comparing alternatives, identifying relationships between form and meaning, articulating hypotheses, and reflecting on the consequences of grammatical choices. Linguistic control concerns the ability to draw on this knowledge during production and interpretation. It includes selecting forms, maintaining relationships across sentences, monitoring emerging language, identifying mismatches between intention and expression, and revising language when necessary.

The distinction is important because awareness and control do not develop identically. A learner may possess detailed explicit knowledge but be unable to access it rapidly during speech. Another may use familiar structures automatically while having limited capacity to analyse them or transfer them to unfamiliar situations. Language education must therefore address not only what learners know about grammar but how that knowledge becomes available, adaptable, and increasingly self-regulated.

The central research question guiding the paper is:

How can grammar awareness contribute to the development of self-monitoring, linguistic precision, and increasingly independent control over language use?

Four related questions organize the discussion:

  1. How should grammar awareness and linguistic control be conceptually distinguished?
  2. Through which processes can reflective grammatical knowledge support production and revision?
  3. How do feedback, multilingual comparison, and task conditions influence the development of control?
  4. Which pedagogical practices can strengthen linguistic autonomy without reducing grammar to mechanical correctness?

This is a conceptual paper rather than a report of an empirical intervention. Its contribution lies in the development of a model connecting grammatical reflection with the progressive regulation of language in speaking and writing.

2. Grammar Awareness as Reflective Linguistic Knowledge

Grammar awareness begins when language becomes available not only as a medium of communication but also as an object of attention. A speaker may ordinarily focus on what a sentence means without consciously examining how that meaning is organized. Reflective awareness introduces a second level of activity: the learner considers the linguistic choices through which the message has been constructed.

This capacity includes several related abilities:

  • recognizing recurring structural patterns;
  • separating form from immediate communicative content;
  • comparing alternative formulations;
  • identifying grammatical relationships;
  • explaining why a form is appropriate in a particular context;
  • recognizing ambiguity or unintended meaning;
  • formulating and revising grammatical generalizations.

Grammar awareness should not be equated with the possession of technical terminology. Terminology can support precision by providing shared labels for linguistic phenomena, but labels are useful only when they connect with conceptual understanding. A learner may identify a structure as passive without understanding why a writer has chosen to suppress, background, or postpone reference to the agent. Another learner may be unable to name the passive construction but may understand its communicative effect.

The most educationally valuable form of grammar awareness therefore connects form, meaning, and use. The learner does not merely recognize that two sentences differ. The learner can interpret what the difference contributes.

Consider the following examples:

The committee rejected the proposal.

The proposal was rejected.

The central event is similar, but the organization of information differs. The first sentence foregrounds the actor. The second places the proposal in the initial position and may leave the source of the decision unexpressed. The passive construction can be appropriate when the actor is unknown, already established, institutionally predictable, or intentionally backgrounded. It may also be used strategically to obscure responsibility.

Grammatical analysis becomes meaningful when learners investigate these consequences. The question is not only how to transform one sentence into another, but why a speaker or writer might choose one representation rather than the other.

Grammar awareness is thus a form of linguistic reasoning. It enables learners to move beyond binary judgements of correctness and examine relationships among grammatical structure, communicative intention, discourse organization, and social context.

3. Linguistic Control Beyond Correctness

The term linguistic control can easily be misunderstood as complete command over a fixed and uniform language system. Such an interpretation would suggest that advanced learners achieve control by eliminating variation and approximating an idealized native-speaker norm. This paper adopts a different position.

Linguistic control refers to the capacity to make, maintain, and revise language choices in relation to purpose. It is demonstrated when learners can express distinctions intentionally, monitor whether a formulation represents their intended meaning, and adapt language to changing audiences or contexts.

Control may involve accuracy, but it is not reducible to accuracy. A grammatically conventional sentence may still be vague, inappropriate, misleading, excessively categorical, or unsuitable for the genre. Conversely, a sentence containing a minor formal deviation may communicate its intended meaning successfully.

Consider the statement:

This study proves that digital learning improves education.

The sentence may be structurally acceptable, yet its claim may exceed the available evidence. A more controlled formulation might be:

The findings suggest that the digital intervention supported particular aspects of learner participation within the context examined.

The revision involves grammatical and lexical decisions. The verb suggest represents a more cautious relationship between evidence and conclusion. The subordinate clause limits the scope of the claim, while within the context examined establishes an interpretive boundary. Linguistic control is visible in the writer’s ability to calibrate certainty and prevent overgeneralization.

Control also includes the ability to preserve relationships across longer stretches of discourse. A learner may produce accurate individual sentences while failing to maintain clear reference, logical progression, temporal consistency, or appropriate information structure. Grammatical control therefore extends beyond sentence-level correctness. It contributes to cohesion, stance, argumentation, and the management of the reader’s or listener’s attention.

A functional account of control asks:

  • Does the form express the intended temporal relationship?
  • Is the source of information clear?
  • Can the reader identify the relevant referent?
  • Is agency represented accurately?
  • Does the level of certainty correspond to the evidence?
  • Is the relationship between clauses explicit?
  • Does the formulation suit the genre and audience?

The aim is not unrestricted variation. Language communities establish conventions that affect intelligibility and participation. Learners need access to these conventions, particularly in academic, professional, and institutional contexts. The development of control nevertheless requires more than compliance. It requires understanding the effects and limitations of linguistic choices.

4. Explicit and Implicit Grammatical Knowledge

The distinction between explicit and implicit knowledge is central to understanding why grammar awareness does not automatically produce fluent control.

Explicit knowledge is consciously accessible. Learners may state a rule, explain a contrast, identify an inaccurate form, or deliberately consult grammatical knowledge during revision. Implicit knowledge operates more rapidly and is generally less available for verbal explanation. It supports language processing and production without requiring continuous conscious analysis.

These forms of knowledge should not be interpreted as complete opposites. They can interact, yet they remain distinguishable. Measures of second-language knowledge have repeatedly shown that learners may demonstrate different levels of performance depending on whether tasks permit reflection or require rapid processing (Ellis, 2005; Zhang, 2015).

The distinction can be observed in ordinary learning situations. A learner may know that English third-person singular verbs require an inflection in the simple present but omit it during spontaneous speech. The explicit rule is available, but the learner cannot consistently coordinate it with message planning, lexical retrieval, pronunciation, and interactional demands.

Another learner may use the form accurately in familiar expressions without being able to explain it. The structure has become available through repeated exposure and use, but reflective knowledge remains limited.

Research comparing explicit and implicit instructional conditions suggests that explicit attention may support accuracy, while more implicit experience can contribute differently to fluency and rapid production (Lichtman, 2021). These findings caution against assuming that one form of learning produces every dimension of proficiency equally.

Grammar awareness belongs primarily to the reflective side of language knowledge, but its educational purpose is not to keep language permanently under conscious control. Constant rule consultation would make spontaneous communication slow and fragile. Awareness should support the development of increasingly accessible patterns while remaining available when learners encounter uncertainty, complexity, or the need for revision.

Linguistic control therefore involves flexible movement between levels of attention. Familiar structures may operate automatically, while more demanding choices receive deliberate consideration. Skilled language users do not consciously analyse every sentence, but they can redirect attention towards language when a communicative problem arises.

5. Pattern Recognition and Grammatical Generalization

Learners encounter grammar through repeated linguistic experience. Words, phrases, and structures occur in patterned relationships. Over time, learners develop expectations about which combinations are possible, frequent, or contextually appropriate.

Pattern recognition allows language use to become more efficient. Rather than constructing every sentence from isolated rules, learners process familiar sequences as larger configurations. Expressions such as there is evidence that, would have been, on the basis of, and it depends on whether become recognizable units that support fluent production.

However, repeated patterns do not remain entirely fixed. Learners identify variable positions and construct broader generalizations. A learner who encounters I would like to ask, I would like to explain, and I would like to suggest may gradually recognize a productive structure that can be extended to new verbs.

Generalization is necessary because language ability cannot depend on memorizing every possible sentence. It is also a source of developmental error. Learners may apply an emerging pattern too broadly, producing forms that are systematic but not conventional. Such errors reveal active rule formation rather than an absence of learning.

Grammar awareness can support this development by helping learners compare examples and determine:

  • which elements remain stable;
  • which elements may vary;
  • what meaning the pattern expresses;
  • under which conditions it is appropriate;
  • where the generalization ceases to apply.

The distinction between pattern and rule is significant. A pattern describes a recurring relationship in language experience. A rule is an explicit formulation intended to account for that relationship. Pedagogical rules are necessarily selective. They offer useful orientation but rarely represent the entire distribution of a form.

Learners therefore need to treat rules as structured generalizations rather than inflexible commands. When new evidence appears, the rule may need to be restricted, expanded, or reformulated. This process is not a sign that grammar is arbitrary. It reflects the gradual differentiation of grammatical knowledge.

6. Form, Meaning, and Conceptual Precision

Grammar is sometimes presented as the formal arrangement of language, while vocabulary is treated as the principal carrier of meaning. This separation is misleading. Grammatical structures organize relationships that are central to interpretation.

Tense and aspect represent events from different temporal perspectives. Modality expresses possibility, necessity, permission, obligation, prediction, and degrees of commitment. Voice organizes agency and attention. Articles and determiners contribute to reference. Clause structure represents cause, contrast, condition, concession, sequence, and dependency.

Compare:

The intervention improved learner performance.

The intervention may have improved learner performance.

Learner performance improved during the intervention.

An improvement in learner performance was observed during the intervention.

The sentences concern related content, yet they distribute certainty, agency, and evidential responsibility differently. The first sentence attributes a causal role directly to the intervention. The second limits the strength of that conclusion. The third reports co-occurring change without making the causal relationship equally explicit. The fourth foregrounds the observation while leaving the observer unexpressed.

Grammar awareness contributes to conceptual precision when learners can identify these differences and connect them with communicative responsibility. A writer who changes a modal verb may be revising not only style but also the epistemic status of a claim. A speaker who selects a conditional structure distinguishes between an actual possibility and an unrealized alternative.

This relationship does not imply that grammar determines thought. Rather, grammatical resources make distinctions available for explicit formulation. The ability to represent temporal sequence, conditional dependency, evidential limitation, or degrees of certainty allows learners to articulate more differentiated relationships.

Linguistic control is demonstrated when these resources are selected intentionally rather than reproduced mechanically.

7. Monitoring and the Detection of Mismatch

Self-monitoring is the process through which speakers and writers compare emerging language with an intended meaning, familiar pattern, or communicative standard. It does not require constant conscious inspection. Monitoring becomes especially visible when a learner pauses, reformulates, rereads, or recognizes that a sentence does not express the intended relationship.

A mismatch may arise at several levels:

  • the form is not conventionally structured;
  • the grammatical choice produces an unintended meaning;
  • reference is unclear;
  • the level of certainty is inappropriate;
  • the relationship between ideas is insufficiently expressed;
  • the sentence conflicts with the surrounding discourse;
  • the register does not suit the context.

Grammar awareness gives learners categories through which such mismatches can be interpreted. Without awareness, a learner may experience only a general sense that something “sounds wrong.” This intuition can be useful, but it may not provide a path towards revision.

A more analytically developed learner can identify the source:

  • the subject and verb do not agree;
  • the tense conflicts with the established time frame;
  • the pronoun has more than one possible referent;
  • the relative clause is attached ambiguously;
  • the conditional form does not represent the intended degree of possibility;
  • the passive construction conceals information that the argument requires.

The capacity to name and classify a difficulty reduces dependence on external correction. The learner can search for relevant evidence, compare alternatives, and evaluate a revised formulation.

Monitoring is nevertheless constrained by attention. During spontaneous communication, learners must coordinate content, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, interaction, and listener response. Excessive monitoring can interrupt fluency and increase hesitation. Effective control therefore requires selectivity: the learner directs attention towards features that are especially important for meaning, recurring personal difficulties, or the demands of the current task.

8. Self-Correction as Reconstructive Activity

Self-correction is often treated as the replacement of an inaccurate form with a correct one. This description captures the visible result but not the underlying learning process. A correction becomes developmentally significant when the learner reconstructs the relationship that produced the original difficulty.

Suppose a learner writes:

The results show that the participants were improve their performance.

Replacing were improve with improved repairs the sentence. Yet the correction may remain isolated if the learner does not understand the competing structures involved. The original form may reflect an incomplete distinction among a simple past verb, a passive construction, and a progressive form.

A reconstructive process would involve questions such as:

  • Is the subject performing the action or receiving it?
  • Is an ongoing process being emphasized?
  • Does the structure require an auxiliary?
  • Which form carries the tense?
  • What is the function of were in the intended sentence?

Through this analysis, the learner reorganizes the grammatical representation rather than memorizing a replacement.

Self-correction can therefore involve several stages:

  1. recognizing that a difficulty exists;
  2. locating the relevant linguistic element;
  3. identifying the relationship involved;
  4. generating one or more alternatives;
  5. evaluating each alternative in context;
  6. revising the sentence;
  7. applying the distinction in a later task.

The final stage is essential. Immediate revision demonstrates that the learner can respond to the current problem. Transfer to new language provides stronger evidence that the underlying knowledge has changed.

Research on written feedback indicates that opportunities to revise can deepen engagement with grammatical information, although learners differ in the extent to which they benefit from explanation and revision. Language analytical ability, target structure, feedback form, and processing depth may all influence outcomes (Shintani & Ellis, 2015).

Self-correction should not be romanticized as universally superior to direct support. Learners cannot reconstruct distinctions for which they lack sufficient knowledge or evidence. Effective pedagogy varies the degree of assistance. Some situations require an explicit correction; others benefit from a prompt, question, category label, comparison, or request for reformulation.

The objective is gradual transfer of responsibility, not the withdrawal of guidance before learners are prepared to use it.

9. Written Language as an Environment for Control

Writing provides conditions that are particularly favourable for grammatical reflection. Unlike spontaneous speech, it generally allows time to inspect language, compare formulations, and return to earlier decisions. The written text remains visible, enabling relationships to be examined across clauses, sentences, and paragraphs.

Revision is therefore a central environment for developing linguistic control. It requires learners to reconsider the relationship between intention and expression. A writer may discover that the original sentence is grammatically possible but conceptually imprecise.

Consider:

The researchers interviewed the participants who were concerned about data protection.

The relative clause may imply that only the concerned participants were interviewed, or it may be intended to add information about all participants. The distinction affects both grammar and research meaning. A revision must make the intended scope explicit:

The researchers interviewed only those participants who had expressed concerns about data protection.

or:

The researchers interviewed the participants, all of whom had expressed concerns about data protection.

The punctuation and grammatical structure encode different relations between the participant group and the additional information.

Writing also makes patterns of difficulty visible. A single tense inconsistency may be accidental, but repeated shifts can indicate uncertainty about the temporal organization of the text. Recurring pronoun ambiguity may reveal limited attention to reference. Repeated categorical claims may indicate insufficient control of stance.

Corrective feedback can support this development, but its effectiveness depends partly on what learners do with it. Direct correction may improve the immediate text without requiring substantial analysis. Metalinguistic feedback, prompts, and scaffolded revision can encourage learners to interpret the difficulty and participate more actively in correction.

Research comparing direct, teacher-scaffolded, and self-scaffolded feedback suggests that the organization of learner engagement is relevant to the development of grammatical accuracy (Boggs, 2019). Similarly, focused metalinguistic feedback can affect explicit and implicit grammatical knowledge differently, indicating that correction is not a single, uniform process (Zhang, 2021).

Written control should not be evaluated only through the absence of error. Strong writing requires the coordination of grammar with content, argument, organization, and audience. Excessive attention to surface form can consume the attention required for higher-order development. Grammar work is most productive when it is integrated with meaning and rhetorical purpose.

10. Spoken Production and Real-Time Control

Speaking places different demands on grammatical control. Language must be produced rapidly, often without the possibility of returning to revise earlier utterances. Speakers coordinate conceptual planning, lexical access, grammatical encoding, pronunciation, turn-taking, and interpretation of the listener’s response.

Under these conditions, explicit grammatical knowledge may be difficult to access. A learner can explain a rule successfully during an exercise but fail to apply it during an extended conversation. This does not necessarily indicate that the explanation was meaningless. It indicates that reflective knowledge has not yet become sufficiently accessible under real-time pressure.

Spoken control develops through repeated opportunities to use structures for meaningful purposes. Practice must vary enough to prevent the form from remaining attached to a single exercise or memorized sentence.

Grammar awareness can support speaking when it is used before or after communication rather than imposed continuously during it. Before a task, learners may identify a structure useful for expressing comparison, uncertainty, sequence, or hypothetical reasoning. During communication, attention remains primarily on meaning. Afterward, selected examples can be revisited and reformulated.

Recorded speech can create a bridge between spontaneous use and reflective analysis. Learners may listen to a short recording, transcribe selected passages, and examine recurring structures. This makes spoken language available for the kind of inspection normally associated with writing.

Oral feedback also requires careful timing. An immediate correction may be appropriate when an error blocks understanding or concerns the current learning objective. Repeated interruption, however, can fragment communication and reduce willingness to attempt complex language.

Classroom research has generally found that oral corrective feedback can contribute to language development, but outcomes vary according to feedback type, context, target structure, and learner characteristics (Li, 2010; Lyster & Saito, 2010). The educational aim should be to preserve interaction while creating moments in which learners can notice and reconstruct relevant forms.

11. Feedback, Scaffolding, and Learner Agency

Feedback is frequently described as information supplied to learners about the accuracy of their language. A more complete account treats feedback as part of a relationship among evidence, interpretation, action, and future performance.

Feedback has limited educational value when learners cannot understand it, do not know how to respond, or apply the correction only to the original sentence. Effective feedback should help learners answer three questions:

  1. What relationship in my language requires attention?
  2. Why does it matter in this context?
  3. How can I use this understanding in another situation?

Different forms of feedback distribute responsibility differently. Direct correction provides the target form. Indirect feedback signals that a problem exists. Metalinguistic explanation identifies or describes the relevant category. A prompt invites the learner to retrieve or reconstruct a form. A contrast provides evidence through comparison.

No single feedback type is universally optimal. A direct correction can be efficient when the form is unfamiliar or when excessive problem solving would distract from the task. A prompt may be more useful when the learner already possesses partial knowledge. Metalinguistic explanation can support analysis but may become inaccessible when terminology is unfamiliar.

Scaffolding refers to the temporary organization of support so that learners can perform an activity that would otherwise remain beyond their independent capacity. In grammar learning, scaffolding may begin with explicit modelling, move towards guided comparison, and later require independent diagnosis and revision.

The gradual reduction of support is crucial. If teachers or digital tools correct every deviation immediately, the final text may improve while the learner’s regulatory capacity remains unchanged. The learner becomes skilled at accepting corrections rather than generating them.

Agency develops when learners participate in decisions about language. They should be able to ask why a suggestion has been made, compare alternatives, reject an unsuitable revision, and explain their final choice. Linguistic control is incompatible with passive compliance because control requires ownership of the relationship between meaning and form.

12. Multilingual Grammar Awareness

Multilingual learners approach grammar with knowledge developed across more than one linguistic system. They possess expectations about word order, agreement, tense, aspect, case, definiteness, information structure, and discourse organization. These expectations influence how additional languages are interpreted.

Cross-linguistic influence is often discussed primarily as a source of error. A learner transfers a familiar structure into a context where it is not conventional. This phenomenon is important, but it represents only one dimension of multilingual knowledge.

Previous languages also provide analytical resources. Learners may recognize a grammatical category more quickly because they have encountered a comparable distinction elsewhere. They can compare how languages represent time, agency, possession, politeness, or certainty. Such comparison makes linguistic organization more visible.

The educational value of comparison depends on avoiding false equivalence. Similar forms do not always perform identical functions, and different forms may express comparable meanings. A multilingual learner therefore needs to examine not only whether a structure exists in another language but how its distribution and communicative role differ.

Multilingual grammar awareness can involve questions such as:

  • Is this distinction grammatically obligatory in each language?
  • Is the same meaning expressed through morphology, word order, or context?
  • Does a similar tense form have the same temporal range?
  • How is emphasis represented?
  • Which information can remain implicit?
  • How are politeness and social distance encoded?
  • What counts as conventional academic organization?

Allowing learners to use more than one language during grammatical reflection can support conceptual access. A complex explanation may first be developed in a stronger language and then connected with the target-language structure. This does not remove the need to learn the relevant target-language terminology. It creates a route towards it.

Research on multilingual corrective interaction indicates that strategic movement across languages can support comprehension, participation, and discussion of grammar, particularly when learners are engaged in demanding writing tasks (Wang & Li, 2022).

Multilingual control should not be defined as the complete separation of languages. Experienced multilingual speakers coordinate linguistic resources according to context. Educational practice must distinguish between productive multilingual mediation and forms that create misunderstanding within a particular communicative setting.

13. Precision Without Linguistic Insecurity

Grammar teaching can strengthen control, but it can also produce anxiety when every act of communication is experienced as a test of correctness. Learners who fear grammatical exposure may avoid complex sentences, unfamiliar vocabulary, or spontaneous participation. Their language becomes safer but not necessarily more developed.

Precision should therefore be separated from perfectionism. Linguistic precision concerns the relation between intended and expressed meaning. Perfectionism concerns an unrealistic demand for complete absence of deviation, often regardless of context or communicative consequence.

A productive classroom treats grammatical uncertainty as material for inquiry. Learners are invited to compare, hypothesize, test, and revise. Errors are not celebrated as final outcomes, but neither are they treated as evidence of intellectual deficiency.

The distinction between high-stakes and low-stakes production is useful. In exploratory discussion, fluency and conceptual participation may receive priority. In a revised academic text, precision and conventional form may require greater attention. Learners need to understand why standards shift across tasks rather than receiving the impression that grammar matters arbitrarily.

Selective correction also protects attention. Teachers can prioritize:

  • errors that obscure meaning;
  • recurring patterns;
  • structures connected with the current learning objective;
  • forms important to the relevant genre;
  • deviations the learner is developmentally prepared to examine.

This approach does not lower standards. It organizes them according to learning value.

14. Grammar Awareness and Learner Autonomy

Learner autonomy is not equivalent to studying alone or receiving less instruction. It concerns the capacity to take informed responsibility for learning. In grammar development, autonomy becomes visible when learners can recognize uncertainty, select appropriate resources, evaluate evidence, and revise language without waiting for external correction.

An autonomous learner may not remember every grammatical rule. More importantly, the learner possesses investigative strategies:

  • comparing several authentic examples;
  • consulting a reliable reference grammar;
  • examining corpus evidence;
  • testing alternative sentences;
  • identifying recurrent personal patterns;
  • keeping a record of revisions;
  • asking focused questions;
  • explaining the reason for a final choice.

Grammar awareness makes such strategies possible because learners can formulate the object of investigation. A person who knows only that a sentence “does not sound good” may struggle to locate relevant information. A learner who identifies uncertainty about article use, conditional scope, or pronoun reference can search more effectively.

A grammar journal or revision record can support this development. Rather than listing disconnected mistakes, learners organize entries according to patterns:

Original formulation: The research was focused to investigate learner motivation.

Revised formulation: The research focused on investigating learner motivation.

Relationship examined: Verb–preposition pattern and complement form.

New example: The analysis focuses on identifying recurring linguistic features.

This record connects correction with generalization and transfer.

Autonomy also involves critical judgement. Dictionaries, grammar checkers, translation systems, and automated writing tools may offer alternatives that are formally possible but contextually unsuitable. Learners need to evaluate whether a suggestion preserves meaning, register, disciplinary convention, and authorial intention.

The aim of grammar education is therefore not to produce permanent dependence on a more powerful corrector. It is to develop learners who can participate intelligently in the correction process.

15. The Grammar Awareness–Linguistic Control Cycle

The relationship between awareness and control can be represented as an iterative cycle consisting of eight stages.

15.1 Linguistic Encounter

The learner encounters a form in reading, listening, interaction, instruction, or feedback. At this point, the structure may be processed primarily for meaning.

15.2 Noticing

Attention is directed towards a linguistic feature. The learner recognizes repetition, contrast, uncertainty, or a difference between personal production and another formulation.

Noticing does not yet constitute full understanding. It makes the feature available for further analysis.

15.3 Interpretation

The learner examines what the form contributes to meaning. This stage moves beyond visible structure towards temporal, referential, interpersonal, or discourse function.

15.4 Comparison and Hypothesis Formation

Several examples are compared. The learner identifies stable and variable elements and formulates a provisional generalization.

The hypothesis may concern structure, meaning, distribution, register, or genre.

15.5 Guided or Independent Production

The learner uses the pattern in a new context. Production tests whether the emerging representation can support language beyond the original examples.

15.6 Monitoring

The learner compares the emerging language with communicative intention, contextual expectations, and available grammatical knowledge.

Monitoring may occur during production or retrospectively.

15.7 Revision and Justification

A mismatch leads to reformulation. The learner does not merely replace the form but explains, where possible, what changed and why.

Justification strengthens the connection between awareness and purposeful choice.

15.8 Consolidation and Transfer

The learner encounters or produces the structure in varied contexts. Repeated use increases accessibility, while later comparison refines the original generalization.

Transfer is demonstrated when the learner applies the relationship to a new task, genre, lexical context, or communicative situation.

The cycle is not strictly linear. A revision may reveal that the original interpretation was incomplete. A new example may require a rule to be restricted. Successful production may become less controlled temporarily when learners attempt more complex language.

The model therefore represents grammar development as progressive reorganization rather than the simple accumulation of rules.

16. Pedagogical Applications

A pedagogy intended to connect grammar awareness with control should create repeated movement among observation, explanation, production, and revision.

16.1 Contrastive Sentence Analysis

Learners compare two or more formulations and describe differences in meaning, emphasis, agency, certainty, or information structure.

The purpose is not only to identify the formally correct sentence but to determine which sentence is more appropriate for a specified context.

16.2 Contextualized Rule Formation

Instead of receiving a complete rule before examining language, learners analyse selected examples and formulate an initial explanation. The teacher then refines the explanation and introduces relevant terminology.

This preserves guided discovery without turning grammar into unsupported guessing.

16.3 Meaning-Based Transformation

Traditional transformation exercises can be strengthened by requiring learners to explain what changes in meaning.

For example, an active sentence is not simply converted into the passive. Learners identify how the transformation affects agency, focus, and the organization of known and new information.

16.4 Revision Conferences

Teacher–learner or peer discussions focus on a limited number of passages. Participants identify the writer’s intention, compare alternatives, and discuss the consequences of each revision.

The final choice remains connected with meaning rather than imposed as an unexplained replacement.

16.5 Delayed Self-Correction

Learners return to their work after an interval and identify selected patterns before receiving complete correction. Distance can make the text easier to inspect and reveal which distinctions have become independently accessible.

16.6 Multilingual Comparison

Learners examine how two or more languages express a shared relationship. Comparison should include both similarity and non-equivalence.

Such activities validate previous linguistic knowledge while developing sensitivity to target-language distribution.

16.7 Oral Reformulation

After a communicative task, learners select one or two utterances and reformulate them for greater clarity or precision. This connects spontaneous production with later reflection without interrupting the original interaction excessively.

16.8 Error Categorization and Transfer

Learners organize recurring difficulties by relationship rather than by individual sentence. They then produce new examples demonstrating the revised pattern.

The task is complete only when the distinction can be applied beyond the original correction.

17. Assessment Implications

If grammar awareness and linguistic control are distinct but related, they should not be assessed through a single task.

An untimed grammaticality judgement may reveal explicit knowledge but provide limited evidence of rapid language processing. A spontaneous speaking task may show accessible control but underestimate reflective understanding. A polished written text may conceal extensive external correction. An explanation may demonstrate terminology without proving independent use.

A more complete assessment framework would include:

  • recognition of grammatical contrasts;
  • explanation of form–meaning relationships;
  • editing and revision;
  • spontaneous production;
  • delayed transfer to a new task;
  • justification of linguistic choices;
  • ability to interpret and apply feedback.

Assessment should also recognize that increasing complexity can temporarily reduce accuracy. A learner who attempts subordinate clauses, modal distinctions, or more complex information structures may produce more visible errors than a learner who remains within familiar patterns. Error counts alone can therefore misrepresent development.

The relevant question is not simply how many deviations occur, but what the learner is attempting, which distinctions are under development, and whether monitoring and revision are becoming more independent.

18. Implications for Digital Language Tools

Digital grammar checkers, writing assistants, and translation systems increasingly participate in learner revision. These tools can make patterns visible, provide alternatives, and reduce the time required to locate certain surface-level difficulties.

Their educational value depends on how they are used. Automatically accepting every suggestion may improve the immediate text while weakening the learner’s role in diagnosis and decision-making. A system cannot be assumed to understand the writer’s intended meaning, disciplinary context, or preferred voice.

Language-aware use of digital tools requires learners to ask:

  • What feature has the system identified?
  • Does the suggestion preserve my intended meaning?
  • Is the alternative appropriate for this genre?
  • Is the system treating stylistic variation as error?
  • Can I explain why the revision is stronger?
  • Does the same pattern occur elsewhere in my writing?

The presence of automated correction makes grammar awareness more, not less, important. Learners need sufficient linguistic knowledge to evaluate computational advice.

Digital tools should therefore be integrated as sources of evidence and comparison rather than as unquestionable authorities.

19. Research Directions

The proposed model raises several questions for empirical investigation.

First, longitudinal research could examine whether learners who regularly justify grammatical revisions develop stronger transfer than learners who receive corrections without explanation.

Second, studies could compare the effects of different sequences of support: direct correction followed by analysis, guided self-correction, peer explanation, corpus consultation, and multilingual comparison.

Third, research should investigate how grammar awareness operates under different processing conditions. The same learner may demonstrate different levels of control in spontaneous speech, planned speech, timed writing, and revised writing.

Fourth, multilingual studies could examine how learners distribute grammatical reasoning across languages. Particular attention should be given to whether cross-linguistic comparison supports conceptual understanding, accelerates noticing, or introduces misleading equivalences.

Fifth, digital writing tools create a need to investigate the difference between textual improvement and learner development. A revised product does not establish that the learner has understood or internalized the grammatical relationship.

Finally, the proposed cycle should be tested across age groups, educational contexts, target languages, and proficiency levels. Grammar awareness may function differently for young learners, adults, heritage-language speakers, and experienced multilinguals.

20. Limitations

This paper offers a conceptual framework and does not provide empirical validation of the proposed Grammar Awareness–Linguistic Control Cycle. The stages should be treated as analytical distinctions rather than as a fixed developmental sequence.

The concept of linguistic control also requires contextual interpretation. Language conventions differ across communities, genres, and institutional settings. Control cannot be defined through a single universal standard.

Furthermore, grammar awareness is only one factor in language performance. Working memory, lexical knowledge, motivation, anxiety, task familiarity, exposure, interactional opportunity, and educational history all influence the extent to which learners can use grammatical knowledge.

Finally, explicit reflection may not benefit every structure or learner equally. Some forms are difficult to explain economically, while others may become accessible primarily through repeated meaningful experience. A language-aware pedagogy must therefore remain flexible rather than replacing one rigid instructional method with another.

21. Conclusion

Grammar awareness and linguistic control are closely connected, but they are not identical. Grammar awareness allows learners to notice structures, compare alternatives, formulate generalizations, and reflect on the relationship between form and meaning. Linguistic control concerns the ability to use this knowledge selectively during communication, to monitor whether language represents an intended meaning, and to revise expression when necessary.

The distinction explains why rule knowledge does not automatically produce fluent performance. Explicit understanding may remain difficult to access under real-time pressure, while familiar patterns may be used successfully without conscious explanation. Language development requires interaction between reflective knowledge and repeated meaningful use.

Grammar has its greatest educational value when it is treated as a resource for meaning rather than as an isolated collection of prohibitions. Grammatical choices organize agency, time, certainty, reference, emphasis, and relationships between ideas. Awareness of these functions can strengthen conceptual precision as well as formal accuracy.

Self-correction is central to this process, but it should not be reduced to locating and replacing errors. Productive self-correction involves reconstructing the relationship that produced the difficulty, evaluating alternatives, and transferring the resulting understanding to new language.

Feedback and instructional scaffolding remain necessary. Their long-term purpose, however, is to transfer increasing responsibility to the learner. A grammatically polished text produced through continuous external correction is not equivalent to independent linguistic control.

The proposed Grammar Awareness–Linguistic Control Cycle represents development as movement through noticing, interpretation, comparison, production, monitoring, revision, and transfer. These processes recur as learners encounter new structures, genres, and communicative demands.

The ultimate purpose of grammar education is therefore not perfect obedience to decontextualized rules. It is the development of informed linguistic agency: the ability to understand how language organizes meaning, to make deliberate choices, to recognize uncertainty, and to revise expression with increasing independence and precision.
